Welcome to the Graduate Periodontics Clinic

Welcome to the Graduate Periodontics Clinic, at the Faculty of Dentistry, University of Toronto.

The Graduate Periodontics Clinic focuses on treating and maintaining the health of the supporting structures around your teeth, such as your gums and bone. However, if a tooth or multiple teeth are lost, we offer treatment with dental implants. Our Clinic works in partnership with the Oral Reconstructive Centre for implant restoration.

The most common services we offer include:

  • Deep periodontal cleaning

  • Periodontal surgery for treatment of gum disease and bone regeneration

  • Periodontal plastics surgery (gum graft)

  • Bone regeneration for dental implant placement

  • Dental implants

We also offer mild and moderate sedation, including single drug IV sedation, for these treatments.

Implant Study - Patients Wanted

We are seeking a select group of patients for a clinical study of a dental implant type designed to replace upper first molar (back) teeth immediately or shortly (4 to 8 weeks later) after tooth removal. The usual fees will be substantially reduced to $2,500.00 per implant. Additionally, at the end of the study, an honorarium of $500.00 will be given.

To qualify for participation, patients must have at least one upper first molar tooth needing extraction and wishing its replacement with a dental implant. Patients should have a primary dental care provider and be referred by them.

Further information can be obtained via e-mail from Professor Douglas Deporter, Faculty of Dentistry, University of Toronto: douglas.deporter@dentistry.utoronto.ca

How to book an appointment:

Existing patients at the Faculty of Dentistry:

Step 1. If you are already a patient at another dental clinic at the Faculty of Dentistry, they can refer you to the Graduate Periodontics clinic.

Step 2. Once we receive a referral, our receptionist will call you to schedule a new patient periodontal examination. We may request radiographs (x-rays) in preparation for this appointment. During the appointment you will be assigned to one of our residents, who are graduated dentists specializing in periodontics, for a complete examination to check your periodontal health. It is important to remember that each patient's condition varies. Your provider in our clinic will recommend a treatment plan based on your needs.

New patients:

If you are new patient to the Faculty of Dentistry dental clinics, please review our general patient information overview.

Step 1. You will need a referral from your dentist to be seen at the Graduate Periodontics Clinic. Your dentist’s office will need to complete our referral form and submit it through our secure digital portal.  Alternatively, your dentist’s office must fax the referral form to (416) 979-4755.

Step 2. Once we receive the referral, our receptionist will call you to schedule a pre-assessment appointment.

Step 3.  During your pre-assessment appointment, we will assess if your case is compatible with our graduate educational program in advanced periodontal care. If you do not have radiographs (x-rays) on file, a request will be made and you will be sent to take new radiographs at our Radiology Clinic on-site.

Step 4. After completion of your pre-assessment appointment, you will be assigned to one of our residents, who are graduated dentists specializing in periodontics, for a new patient periodontal examination. During this appointment, the resident will become your healthcare provider in our clinic, and will do a complete examination to check the supporting structures around your teeth, such as your gums and bone. It is important to remember that each patient's condition varies. Depending on your needs, your provider will recommend a treatment plan that is suitable for you.
